The Springboard Initiative Graduates Inaugural Class
African-American youth in underserved communities completed technical training program and will enter high-tech apprenticeships in the Bay Area
PLEASANTON, Calif. – June 1, 2017 – Springboard Initiative, a nonprofit based in San Francisco, today announced the graduation of its inaugural class. The 12 graduates participated in a nine-month, full-time free training program designed to provide youth in underserved communities with access to training and the opportunity to acquire professional skills that will allow them to move into higher paying technology jobs. At the same time, the program helps supplement the recruitment pipeline of technology companies in the Bay Area.
Unique features of the Springboard Initiative include:
- On-campus training at City College of San Francisco by CCSF and YMCA instructors
- A curriculum that is defined and created in collaboration with potential employers, emphasizing technical, workforce, social and leadership skills
- Guaranteed employment upon successful completion of the nine-month course of study
- Regular interaction and assessments by the employer during training
- Corporate “companions” to buddy with the Springboard trainee throughout the process
- Ongoing counseling and case management during training and first year of employment
- A dedicated mentor for each student
- Participation of Visa and Ellie Mae as pilot employers
The Springboard Initiative is spearheaded by tech entrepreneur Sig Anderman, Founder and Executive Chairman of Ellie Mae, a financial technology company in the San Francisco Bay Area that employs more than 1,100 individuals, with the majority in high-tech jobs.
“The Springboard Initiative is committed to inspiring under-resourced but talented young minds and training the next generation of technology leaders,” said Anderman. “We are proud of our inaugural graduating class and look forward to these 12 talented students entering the workforce at both Ellie Mae and Visa. Our program combines the elements needed to develop productive high-tech employees, and we love the idea of building a curriculum that meets the technical needs of high-tech companies while giving underserved youth a greater opportunity to succeed.”
“We congratulate this inaugural class of Springboard Initiative graduates and are excited to have many of these talented young people join us as apprentices this summer,” said Jonathan Corr, President and CEO of Ellie Mae.
Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown addressed the graduates at the Springboard event on Wednesday. His inspirational speech described his own childhood in a segregated Texas town and highlighted his rise to become the first African American Speaker of the California Assembly and first African American Mayor of San Francisco. Brown urged the graduates to write their own life stories, seize the opportunity they have been given and set the example of achievement for their peers.
“We are rethinking how talent is developed in the high-tech industry and finding new ways to make it accessible to underserved youth,” said the Springboard Initiative’s Anderman. “Our goal is to break the chronic cycle of underemployment and frustration in our minority communities, and simultaneously address the massive shortage of technical talent in our country.”
